Phila. Resident's Son Killed in Viet Action

A Maryland native whose mother resides in Philadelphia was killed in Vietnam fighting earlier this month, his mother learned Wednesday.
Army Sp 4 Charles L. Briddell, 23, of 1600 W. Thompson St., was reported missing in action January 17. His mother, Mrs. Janet Briddell, a widow, received an Army telegram Wednesday informing her that her son had died in a fire fight in hostile operations.
"He did a lot of things when he was home," Mrs. Briddell said, "like odd jobs and driving a truck. But he could look at anything and sketch it and he planned to study art when he got out of the Army in May."
Mrs. Briddell said her last word from her son was during the holidays when she received a Christmas card and a letter describing how much he was looking forward to returning home.
Briddell attended high school in Berlin, Md. He has two brothers, Michael, 10 and Larry, 19.
