My Vietnam Namesake
Posted for: WILLIAM EDWARD HAWKINS:
My name is William E. Hawkins. I graduated from high school in 1969 in Minnesota. Within a year of graduation, a friend of mine from high school was killed in Vietnam. The first time I went to "the Wall" I looked up my friend Art, he is on line 101 of 10W. As I looked on 10W I saw the name William E. Hawkins two rows below on 103. That was one year after the Vietnam Memorial opened and I have never forgotten it. I realized that I was fortunate to not have had to gone to Vietnam and that someone with my name had gone and paid the ultimate price. If anyone reads this I just want to let them know that I'm so sorry that "Bill" had to die and even though we never knew each other he has had a dramatic impact on my life. I strive to be the best that I can every day and do not take my 52 years on earth for granted. I am eternally indebted to Bill, my friend Art and the other 57,000 who sacrificed. When my time is done I hope to meet Art, Bill and others again. The Bible states that "no greater love hath man than to give his life for another." Thanks Bill and Art, there is no way to repay you, but rest assured that I honor your memory.
