Always in my Thoughts

He always wanted to be a Marine; that's all he ever talked about. We used to kid him by calling him "Jar Head" ' and "Leather Neck" even while he was still in High School. When I joined the Navy he started calling me "Swabby". We grew up in the "Northside" section in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn and many went to P.S. 17 or one of the local Catholic schools. Me, Anthony (we called him "Sans" for short), Petey, Robbie, Nicky Mo, Vinny "The Mouth", Tina, Marie, Phyllis, Demko, Richie "The Commisioner", and Barry, were some of the crew that hung out together. There were much more but too many to name.(there must have been 50 in our small group). We came from Roebling St, Driggs Ave., Grand St. North 6th St. Metropolitan Ave. etc. which are only faded memories today.
We all hung out on Havemeyer Street in front of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Paulie's Candy Store and Patsy's Candy Store, and the Church Bowling Alley. And usually after making too much noise or spending no money we were thrown (asked to leave) out. Like me, Sans could never take the cold. And later when we got older, and had more money we rented a store front and established a Social Atlethic Club. Ours was one of many in the neighborhood. We named our club "Twilight", probably because some of our members seemed to come from that Zone. The club was a good place to hang out and it kept us out of trouble most of the time.
Sans was an accomplished artist and studied at the High School of Art and Design in Manhattan. He wanted to be a Illustrator when he finished his stint in the Marines. I saw some of his work, he was very good.
Some of us have drifted away, some still keep in touch, some remained very close and dear friends, and some have sadly fallen out of friendship because of misunderstandings and failures to communicate. But we are all together in our feelings towards Sans. We miss him terribly and will alway be saddened by his untimely death, at the young age of 19, in Vietnam.
