| Wild Bill | |

| I first met you in early Jan 68 when I reported in to A Co 504th MP Bn at Nha Trang. I was 21, a SGT and not very wise. Initially we didn't hit it off. The Tet Offensive of 1968 started at about 12:30 a.m. for us. Later in the a.m. I volunteered (see what I mean about wise) for what became a "Hairy" mission. You surprised me by volunteering to escort me (and cover my back). This was my first combat and as we approached our destination the explosions and automatic weapons fire both excited and frightened me, but not you! Your demeanor gave me strength. You became my mentor and I became a better soldier and person because of you. Later the platoon flew to Phu Bai, we left heat and sunshine for overcast rain and cold. We built bunkers by day and pulled perimeter guard at night. Always tired and always wet, we also had to contend with the rats that seemed to be everywhere. I believe you earned the nickname "Wild Bill" because 1. you were from Texas and 2. you were the only guy who'd stand up to LT. P., our boss. You called it as you saw it. You went to Camp Evans and took charge of a squad of MPs. In mid May we got together at Phu Bai over warm beer. You were all smiles and happiness and all you could talk about was going home to your wife. Being married too, I appreciated your feelings. The morning of 19 May 68 we got word at Phu Bai that you had died. While on patrol you came upon two wounded GIs. They had walked into a minefield. Without considering your own safety you went to their rescue but didn't make it. Not many days pass that I don't think of you. You would have hated being called "A Hero", but that's what you are in every sense of the word and always will be to me. Welcome Home Old Buddy, Welcome Home. |
