Edward M. Pike was a good Soldier and friend. As I can remember he had not been a Crewchief very long.
After 30 years I seen a Friend of Pike looking for some one that was with him and know how he was killed
James Stapler we talk on the phone and still e-mail each other. About two weeks later I seen some one looking
To find out about there Brother and what happen I talk to Kim and Leslie (Pike) Dial his sister's Leslie and still stay
E-mail each other. Now to Jan. 31, 1968 TET we were hit about 3:15 in the morning with rockets and mortars
at that time I was hit not bad, but they send me to Medic’s on base Cu Chi Edward Pike as I remember had Bunker
Line guard duty that night. He did not have to fly that day but he was not going to let anyone else fly his Gunship.
Not sure how many of Diamondhead Gunship went up to Saigon??? My ship was the only left some one came and
told me they wanted he back to B Co. that I was going to Saigon with 6 or 7 Gunship from the 3/4 Cav. Edward pike
Had been there an hour or to before we got there. After supporting the 3/4 Cav.Ground Troops on Highway 1 at
Tan Son Nhut Air Base. When we went to refuel and rearm Pike Gunship was the only Diamondhead Gunship still flying.
We flew about two or three more missions’ our Coppers had been shot up pretty good. Pike and I and the other two Gunners
Were joking around not knowing this would be the lost time I would see Edward Pike a Live. We had been the air 20 or more min.
Not sure. That when I hard over the radio we have dead Man aborted at that time we went back to Tan Son Nhut Air Base
And I and gunner on Pike ship got his body out of his Copper. I well not go in to details where and how he was shot.
Edward M. Pike was a fallen hero and friend of many that knew him. God Bless you Edward M. Pike and Kim and Leslie (Pike) Dial
His sister's and his other sister and family and to James Stapler Pike Friend and school friend that also serve in the nam.
