| Remembering Jerry | |
| Posted for: JERRY CAPE: | |
| I remember when Jerry and his parents, (my dad's aunt and uncle) came to visit us in Spartanburg in '66. I was 9, and I was standing in the bedroom I shared with Lisa. I was playing my new player organ, as Jerry slipped up behind me and listened. I didn't know too many tunes yet, and my fingering was timid. I turned the page and began playing "Onward Christian Soldiers", and was startled when, suddenly, Jerry began singing aloud. He had a strong controlled voice, and he projected the words with passion. It was my last memory of him. Jerry is buried in the Cape family plot just past the Baldwin family plot in Lanford (Enoree SC). I remember his military funeral there, the Marine playing Taps, and the 3 Marines firing their rifles. I am currently reading the Nelson DeMille novel, "Up Country", and there are numerous references to Quang Tri, the province where Jerry was killed. I searched the online photographs today, and felt sorrow for Jerry and the young men who died there, 4/25/67. I cannot fathom the kaos these Marines faced as they "dug in", and controlled the riverbanks (Perfume River). Losing our young men, whatever is cause, is tragic, and forever changes the dynamics of each family. We will honor them through our memories, all our lives! |
