He was a good friend.

Although all Dust Off medics were heroes in my book, I would like to say a few words about a medic I know very well.

RONALD LOUIS DOOLITTLE was one of the best Medics I have had the honor to fly with. He was a good friend. He was with the 82 Med Det when I first joined the unit in 1967. He flew with me during the Tet Offensive in 1968. You could write a book about this man’s accomplishments in Viet Nam.

When he first went to Viet Nam he was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Air Mobil. I think this was in 1966. He was with the Cav at the Ashaw Valley. He was wounded during the engagement while treating his wounded comrades. He was decorated for bravery.

He was sent to Japan to be treated for his wounds.

He volunteered to return to Viet Nam, and was assigned to a hospital in Second Core.

One night the VC overran the hospital. He and a small group of medics held the intensive care ward against the attackers. He was again wounded and sent back to Japan for treatment. He was decorated for bravery.

Again he volunteered to return to Viet Nam and volunteered to go to Dust Off. He flew with the 82 Med Det. He died doing what he did best, saving the lives of his fellow comrades and hundreds of Vietnamese military and civilians. He was decorated for bravery many times during his service with our unit.

I have no idea how many people DOOLITTLE saved, but you can imagine the numbers are in the hundreds.

We were based out of Soc Trang (Baxuyen Province in the Delta, Fourth Core) at the time of his death.
